   If you're looking for a way to make some extra money by doing jobs at home, then learn to think outside the box about the possibilities. There are many creative ways to spend a few hours each day doing jobs at home.

Perhaps you are looking to work for an outside company that gives people jobs at home. You may be able to get paid to do research for a professor at a local university or to grade papers for a local teacher. Before getting jobs at home you should think about things you are good at and things that interest you. There is nothing worse than having jobs at home that don't hold your attention. Look for a local business that allows people to do bookkeeping or payroll jobs at home. Try looking through the classified ads for jobs that can be done at home. It never hurts to give a few companies and try and suggest to them that you perform the duties they require while at home.

Consider other jobs at home that you can gather by assisting your neighbors or friends. Babysitting or nannying for the children of your friends or neighbors can be a great job do to from the comfort of your own home. Especially if you are raising your own kids at home, day care is a great job at home. Do you have neighbors that work full-time and leave their pets behind? If so, consider starting a small business to walk, feed and play with dogs during the day. What a great and fun way to increase jobs at home.

We all know that women who work all day are often too tired or too busy to cook a nice, healthy meal for their family. Why not start a job at home cooking meals for different neighbor families each night? For a small price you cook spend some hours each day making gourmet meals that will keep your neighbors healthy and satisfied after a long day of work.

For those to whom creativity and artistry comes naturally, put an add in the paper to create custom made invitations for weddings, bridal showers, or birthday parties. Get paid to do fun jobs at home that you enjoy. Meet with clients and then take their ideas back to your home. Think of the fun you could have spending a few hours each day creating beautiful and unique invitations to some of life's most special events.

There are endless ways to get jobs at home. You simply have to know what you are good at and then market those skills to the people around you. In no time you can be doing jobs at home that you love.

   Read on to find out how to give yourself an unfair advantage in applying on job search websites.

You need to approach a job search website not from the point of view of someone who wants a job, but from the point of view of the person who has to handle hundreds of applications.

Ultimately, it's that person's hopes and dreams for getting through the mass of applications that matters, not your hopes and dreams vis-a-vis your career.

Here's how you can make that person's dreams come true:

• KISS--keep it simple and short.

• Provide everything asked for in the application. Someone who has to sort through a hundred applications a day doesn't necessarily have time to visit your website, or ask you again for the required writing sample, or even clarify any part of the job advertisement.

• Make sure the very first sentence of your cover letter specifically references the job in question in a way that makes it clear this is not a form letter (even if it is a form cover letter after the first line). Even something fawningly polite--no, especially something fawningly polite--such as "Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to apply for your..." will greatly increase your chances of ending up in the recycling bin.

1. After applying online, work your network to try to make a human connection at the company. The person who posted the job has probably already turned the phone off for fear of going deaf from job applicants' calls. But if you can somehow get within a few degrees of separation of that person's assistant, or even a co-worker, you may be able to get the face time you need to jump out of the resume slush pile.

2. Try snail-mailing and/or faxing an additional copy of your materials, with a note that you just wanted to make sure the person got your application. The note should also have a relevant P.S., such as, "congratulations on winning second-place at the Widgets Convention new product awards." Does this method have the potential to annoy? Yes. Does it give you an effective edge? Usually not--just often enough to make it worthwhile. Ultimately, if you’re serious about getting a job, you need to make sure your application actually makes it front of a pair of human eyes.

3. In your cover letter use a little humor--mind you, just a little, and keep it tame. Don't sound like a comedian, but don't sound exactly like everyone else, either. You have to stop your reader’s eyes from glazing over somehow.

4. Most important of all: submit your application to a recruiter in addition to employers. It's a recruiter's job to sift through applications. They're much more likely to take an interest in you than some human resources officer. Several websites make it easy to submit your applications to numerous recruiters with one push of a button.

5. Most valuable time-saver: Submit your application to a "meta-search" jobs search website, one that will let you apply to listings on numerous other jobs websites at the same time. There are well over a hundred individual jobs websites online, not to mention classifieds. You'll never get to them all on your own otherwise.

In conclusion, the bad news is that you have even more competition than you thought when applying on a job search website. The good news is, it's a lot easier than you thought to make yourself stand out from the competition. Just show the prospective employer with as much respect as you want them to show you.

The Challenge of the Home-Based Business

     With the holidays around the corner, you may find yourself struggling to keep your home-based business and your home life separate and running smoothly. And you're not alone.Operating a home-based business has many benefits as you already know, but its main drawback is that it often causes the line between your work and your personal life to become permanently blurred. Unlike those individuals who work outside the home and who know their day at the office ends when they get in their car and start the commute home, home business operators do not usually have a definite end to their day.

The reverse situation is also possible: they may not have a definite start to their day either. If you have a hard time breaking free of your work responsibilities or if you sometimes have trouble settling in to tackle them, these tips will help you bring both aspects of your life into equilibrium. Separate Your Office From Your Home.

If your work computer is in the living room where everyone in the family congregates, chances are you are being bombarded by distractions. Plus, when it is time for you to relax, you may find it difficult with the computer right there as a constant reminder of all the work you still need to finish and all of the communications you still need to respond to.

The answer is to set aside an area of your home just for work. If you have an office or an extra bedroom where you can set up your space, then you can block out the distractions simply by shutting the door. Also avoid putting anything in your home office that might prevent you from getting your work done, such as a television.

If you don't have an entire room to dedicate to your office, move your computer and materials into a room that is rarely used or that is normally unoccupied when you need to be working, such as a bedroom. Once you have separated your home from your office, you will find it easier to stay focused on your work but also to leave your work in its space so you can relax and enjoy the remainder of your home.

Create Specific Working Hours

One of the best things about running a home-based business is undoubtedly the flexible schedule, but it can also have negative consequences. On the one hand, your schedule may be so flexible that you only work 30 minutes a day or so hectic that you find yourself working at all hours of the day without taking a break.

The answer is to set your own office hours. Creating your own schedule still has benefits. For one, you can decide what time of the day you start, so if you're not a morning person, you don't have to get up at the break of dawn. Also, if you prefer to stop working when your children come home from school, you can consider that when you decide when to stop for the day.

Another benefit is that you provide clients and customers with a specific times when you are available to work with them. The most important thing to remember, however, is to set hours for yourself that you can live with. Once you decide on a schedule, you need to stick with it long-term, so be realistic about how long you can work without taking a break and how much time you'll need to accomplish everything that needs to get done.

And, no matter how much you may be tempted to keep working, you need to stop when you say you are going to stop. Taking a break allows you to come back refreshed and more alert, so you can be more productive. An overworked, overly stressed person simply is not an effective worker at home or in an office.

Draw the Line Between Home and Work Communications

Has this ever happened to you? You and your family have just sat down for a dinner around the table when a client calls to talk about your current project or a customer phones with questions about a recent purchase.
The easiest way to prevent work from interfering with your family is to keep communications separate. Start by having a second phone line dedicated to your work and attaching an answering machine or voice mail to the line.

When your work day ends, you can turn on the machine and let it handle any after-hour calls. An extra phone line also allows you to maintain professionalism. Imagine the embarrassment of having your young child answer the phone when an important customer calls.

You may also want to set up a post office box for all of your business-related mail. Not only will this prevent your important mail from accidentally getting thrown away with the junk, but it will also offer you and your family a level of privacy.

After all, you do not want to make your home address available to everyone; it's just not safe. If you use email or instant messaging as part of your business communications, you'll also want to establish separate accounts for those as well.

The key to running a home-based business is balance. While it may be difficult to stop working on that important project or to concentrate on work while your preparing for the holidays, striking that balance is essential for your well-being, your family's security, and your business's success.
