Five Sure-Fire Ways to Drive Good Employees Away

With the pending severe worker drain prompted by boomers in full or partial retirement, keeping good employees has never been more critical. The most significant word in retention, however, is "engagement". Too many workers are present but their imagination, spirit and creativity have departed out the door with disillusion.

Consider these top five actions that pull the plug on employee energy:

1. Be a know-it-all and discount the input of others.

A new senior level manager was brought into an organization. When department heads met with him, he proclaimed "lower cost, higher quality, more sales". He asked for their input and then immediately dismissed whatever they said. The fact that he had never worked in this particular industry had already prompted skepticism. The department heads, whose support and knowledge are critical for a turnaround, have departed in droves while those who are staying just shrug their shoulders and say they'll hunker down until they find something else.

2. Never admit mistakes.

The worn phrase from the old movie Love Story proclaimed, "Loves means never having to say you're sorry." As wrong as that advice is for intimate relationships, it is just as stupid in business. When ego and arrogance replace the realities of a decision, employees watch in dismay. The operating plan becomes mired in finding ways to justify action rather than admitting error and looking for a new, more promising direction. The cost overruns on building a large golf course were huge because the senior manager refused the input of his department heads and then spent thousands trying to cover up design flaws.

3. Act first and think later.

The ready, fire, aim approach of shoot-from-the-hip-and-think-later is all too common in our 24/7, do-it-now world. The results can be disastrous - particularly if the vehicle for action is e-mail. E-mail now stands for escalation and error. The person who blasts off a response without carefully considering the tone and the names on the distribution list can find himself spending time and energy undoing collateral damage. The more critical the relationship and/or the outcome of the action, the greater wisdom is in carefully measured actions and more likely than not, face-to-face conversation.

4. Create an inner circle that thinks alike.

Howell Raines, executive editor of the NY TIMES, was the subject of a 17,000-word article that appeared in the NEW YORKER in June 6, 2002. It was a brutal expose, painting a documented story of him as an arrogant bully who played favorites, listened only to a few people and pummeled far too many. When folks outside of his inner circle tried to tell him their concerns regarding Jayson Blair, the now infamous fabricator of new stories, Raines ignored them. His resignation from the NY TIMES speaks to the danger of that inner circle.

The higher the stakes, the more critical it is to have input from people with various points of view and different ways of responding to a situation. If a CEO puts people around her who merely parrot her beliefs, the organization is being led by lemmings. And if the inner circle is of a ready-fire-aim mentality, there's no caution in action. If the inner circle mirrors a slow, all-the-facts-first mentality, the organization might miss critical opportunities and be too slow to respond to a changing marketplace. Organizations should consider using assessments in order to understand the behavioral diversity of the team.

5. Say one thing and do another.

A high-tech manufacturing company in Southern California announced significant layoffs because of poor performance. Every budget item was to be scrutinized. The following weekend, the CEO took the top management team away to the Ritz Carlton in Monarch Beach so they could ponder these new realities. Care to guess how fast the employees got wind of this "cost-saving" move? Or how about the professional services firm that proclaimed mandatory attendance and then repeatedly ignored a senior consultant who only showed up when he "felt like it".

If you want to model truth and trust, ask the people around you how often you engage in these behaviors. And if you are not happy with the answers, DO something different. You might also need to bring in an external coach to help you with the process. The results: you win and the organization wins.

Placing Your Business On The Web

By John Maier

This article is a follow up to an earlier article I submitted a few days ago about improving your business for the New Year. In this article I will cover the advantages and some of the details that you should think about as a small business or home base business owner before you create a website. Also I will include some information that you should examine for web hosting for your company’s webpage.
By putting your company on the web it opens your company up to the large market the whole world of people on the internet. Now even though you do this it does not translate in to money right away and nor does it mean that you will be swamped with orders the next day. Pretty much there is a good chance that your business web link will just be buried by all the other existing websites and it takes time and lots of people visiting your site to even show up on the web search engines like Yahoo and Google. What the website does is help market your business and gives you another selling tool for your business products and services. It also provides easy to find important information about you and your company for potential investors and customers that are not sitting in front of you at that time.

Down the road it can be a good way to retail a products and services but first you have to let it build on the World Wide Web. Yes sometimes you can help speed up this process but it will cost you more money and you have to make sure that it is being done properly. Even though putting your business on the World Wide Web can be great for your business it can also be bad if it is not handled properly and you pay fee after fee and you don’t see any return for the money you put into that part of the business.

I have seen what I call bad Web exposure where you have companies that offer promotion programs offering high level web traffic and exposure which can turn out to be nothing more then programs that truly does nothing for your business in any way but just puts your business into the hole which can get really get deep if your not watching the promotion program your company is having run by the company performing the service.

So at this point your thinking maybe this is a good idea or a bad idea and to be honest you truly have to look at your business first before you move on. After you look at your core business then look at how a Website may or may not benefit your business. Now I can tell you that in most case it will truly can benefit your small business or home office if for no other reason then just to promote and present your business in a positive way after all there is a good chance that your customers, business partners and potential investors have access to the Web access and a nicely designed web page be a good starting place to send them.

Usually you can setup a website either on your own using and HTML editor or FrontPage. There lots of free HTML editors and it is pretty easy software to learn. You can of course learn from other web pages just find a few and use them as a sample.

However if you’re a busy trying to run your business then it might be quicker and much easier to just hire someone to create your webpage. There is a good chance that you can find someone that will do the work for you of course the price will very depending on what all you want on your webpage. I believe that you can get a pretty basic website with key things on it for around $100 but that is just an estimate.

Once you got an initial webpage ready you need to find a web hosting company for your company’s webpage. As you looking for a web hosting company I would recommend some key features besides the price to keep in mind. The first thing I would look at is how long the web hosting company has been in business the reason for this is that there are lots of new start up hosting companies these days and not all of them have been around long enough to know how good of a service they provide also the longer the hosting company has been around the more stable they are usually and have a good financial business. I also recommend looking at reviews for web hosting companies by others it give you a good start.

Another thing to keep in mind is once you have a few Web hosting companies in mind look at how much support they provide along with assistance on setting your site. I also would look for service they provide for tracking site statistics for your site.

The next thing I would look at is the services that are provide for the money they charge. Take a look at the server space that they will give you along with how much bandwidth just to name a couple of items. If you are planning on selling goods or services through your site they you need to look at the E-commerce capabilities and how easy it is for you to add-on to your website.

In conclusion putting your small business or home based business on the web is good way to promote your business in many different ways. Although there is cost involve if done properly a well designed and properly promoted webpage can really help your company.

A Free Online Business Is Not Necessarily "Free"

Author: Dana Goldberg

Almost every hour of every day, the Internet turns up with more advertisements to entice people who are interested in starting up their own online business. Why not start an online business, indeed? First off, it is quite lucrative, once you know what you have to do, what you need and how hard your resolution must be to succeed.
Having assured yourself of a sensible and thorough decision, you can start looking up for free online business advertisements. Weigh up your prospects and see the most lucrative of them all. However, you also need to see the reality that free online business is not necessarily free. There may only be some aspects in the business wherein you do not have to invest any amount to actually open up your online business.
Otherwise, there are bills to pay -- internet access, computer maintenance, electric bills, food, etc. Keeping this in mind will prevent you from getting bitterly disappointed.
Next, look up actual experiences of online entrepreneurs who are now earning thousands of dollars. From their experiences you may learn several things that will help you become ready than ever to launch your free online business.
- On getting a domain - Accept the fact that you cannot open up an online business without a website. In looking for a domain, there will be some free offerings while some are paid. Either you choose the free online business domain offerings or the paid ones, remember to research on the features of the domain you will get before starting any transaction. If your online business need more than what the free online business domains are offering, do not hesitate to register in a paid domain.
- On Web hosting - your online business domain must reach everywhere. Better not search free offerings for these and choose the best services, even if they might cost you some dollars. However, choose the web hosting service that offers the ones you need. Do not spend on other features that you do not require.
A reliable web host has great uptime record, offers excellent customer service and has a reputation in the search engines. You do not need empty promises in web hosting services.
- On Website stats - Your online business will rely largely on the users it attracts. It is important to have a great tracker that will actually show you how many visitors you got and be able to identify each one. You must also know their reaction to your website. Know the pages they view most, so that you can refine your website and improve your marketing efforts.
- On Ad tracker - like the website stat, advertisement tracker assists you in knowing which of your marketing campaigns have the best results.
With the advertisement tracker, you will know how many users responded or reacted to your ad. Probably not all your marketing techniques are effective. With the ad tracker, you will know exactly what marketing techniques to retain and continue doing.
- On Auto responders - these tools will assist you in following up your numerous client's requests and queries with necessary data they ask for and you think, they might need.
- On List hosts - for your free online business to prosper, you must know how to capture your target customer's email address. By knowing their e-mail addresses, you can contact them on a more personal level and build a trusting and credible business 'relationship' with them.
Your free online business will also flourish more, if you as its manager and administrator educate yourself in making your venture prosper. Many courses online offer free online business training and comprehensive orientations.
Many free online business information from reputable websites give you tons of tips on handling your internet business.
Free online business may not be very free. Nevertheless, in breaking down the aspects you need to have and know in getting started, you will find many free offerings to take advantage of.

Medical Billing: Not All Medical Billing Home Business Are Scams

By Seth B.

Work at home medical billing seems like the perfect job for you. You own a computer, you want to stay home, pick your own hours. You will even be trained and given leads to professionals that need your service.

But the chances of making the money claimed are slim. Consumers don't realize what they're getting into. Newcomers to the medical billing market with no experience and no contacts in the medical field will face fierce competition. As the FTC alleged, most of the consumers didn't earn a dime.

Not all medical billing opportunities are scams. For consumers interested in buying a medical billing business opportunity, the FTC offers advice:

• Check with the state Attorney General's office, consumer protection agency and the Better Business Bureau in your area and the area where the medical billing promoter is based to learn whether any unresolved complaints about them or the promoter are on file. Be aware, however, that the absence of complaints doesn't necessarily mean the medical billing company is legitimate. But at least you can rule them out if there is.

• Be wary of the medical billing promoter wants to only provide a few references.

• Interview these references in person and ask for the names of their clients and a description of their operations.

• Consult an attorney, accountant or other business advisor before signing any agreement or paying any money.

• Consult with organizations for medical claims processors or medical billing businesses and with local doctors.

• If the medical billing opportunity sells another company's software, check with the software company to find out whether company representatives know of any problems with the medical billing promoter.

All these things may seem like a difficult task, but real medical billing is a business. You need to treat it like one. Don’t be afraid to ask the medical billing promoter questions.
